Department of Materials

Researcher in a lab

Research

Our Department is one of the largest single-site materials activities in Europe with interdisciplinary research spanning the breadth of the materials science field.

We have the highest research power level of any university materials activity in the UK, with 80% of our research rated as being internationally excellent or world-leading in quality.

We have access to outstanding research facilities with specialist equipment in all areas - ranging from characterisation, to materials growth, to device manufacture.

Great importance is placed on our strong collaborations with industry, including small to medium-sized enterprises and large multinationals. These collaborations allow us to aid the translation of the Department’s research into having a wider societal impact.
